What Are Trip & Fuel Permits?
Thursday, 11 December 2008 21:41

Trip & Fuel permits are temporary permits that allow you to travel through that state when you are not registered for that state and do not have IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement).

When do I need to get a Trip &/or Fuel permit?

  1. If you do not have an IFTA sticker or your license is not apportioned for the states you are traveling through.
  2. If your vehicle weights more than 26,000 pounds or 13 tons,
  3. if you are a commercial vehicle with 3 or more axles on the ground regardless of weight.
  4. and you are traveling out of your registered state.
Almost every state has temporary trip & fuel permits. The few that do not, such as Louisiana, you'll need to save any receipts for the fuel you buy in that state, if applicable. Once you leave your state of registration, you'll need to have trip & fuel permits for each state that you travel through. You will also need to purchase a fuel permit for you home state when you come back however, you do not need a trip permit for that state. You must have the permits in your possession before crossing the borders.

Mercury Permit Services can help you with both of these temporary permits. There are four states that you must buy permits at the POE (port of entry), Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon & Wyoming. Those states only allow the driver to purchase them directly. Most other states you can only get their trip and fuel permits through a wire service, such as Nevada, California, & Texas.
